Nar-Phu High Manang Valley trekking leads you from the main popular trail of Annapurna Circuit for some days. As the walk progress and then off the beaten tracks, away from mainstream into the scenic high hidden valley of Nar-Phu. On less ventured areas by only a few groups of trekkers around this remote mountain wilderness of windswept landscapes. Surrounded by high rocky cliffs, snow peaks, the area around make a perfect habitation for elusive snow leopards and other wildlife. 

Epic Adventures Nar-Phu High Manang Valley trekking, an enjoyable and exciting adventure with time to explore around this magnificent country. The area was closed for outside visitors, which was opened in 2002 completely a fresh region around Himalaya. Nar-Phu located above Manang Valley offers stunning views of its beautiful scenery and experiences its fascinating pristine age-old culture.
An adventure from one scenic valley to another and traverse over high passes Kang-La and Thorang-La at 5, 416 m. Includes breathtaking panorama of world highest peaks from Annapurna, Manaslu to Dhaulagiri Himalaya range, along with dramatic scenery.

The journey begins with an interesting drive from Kathmandu towards the low farm areas of Lamjung district around Mid-West Nepal. From rich paddy fields of sub-tropical temperatures, the drive reaches you to cooler hills at Dharapani village around the Manang region. Where our adventure of more than two weeks starts heading higher country past nice villages of Bagarchap, Timang to Koto. 

From Koto village, close to Chame headquarter town of Manang district, our route diverts leaving the popular Annapurna Circuit trail. Heading north away from main villages, to reach remote isolated areas of Nar & Phu and onward to Kang-La Pass.

The adventure leads to a deep river gorge enclosed by high rocky cliffs and towering peaks, then entering a wide-open valley. Walk leads to Meta a small settlement with few huts serves as lodge situated on a wide scenic valley. 

Then reach to our first highlight of the adventure at Phu, a wind-blown village tucked on a high small plateau. An interesting place to experience, with time here to explore the village enriched with strong Tibetan Buddhism and culture.
After a wonderful time having a rest day at Phu, visit its old Tashi-Khang, Samdu Choling Monasteries. Then leaving Phu towards the next main village at Nar on route to Kang-La and beyond to lower Manang valley.

Walk to Nar on the same trail back, as the route turns west to Phedi then on the gentle path to Nar village. Nar is similar and quite smaller than Phu, located on a remote corner of the valley. From here adventure leads to a wild country beyond Nar-Phu around the high area of Manang to cross over Kang-La. The first pass of the journey a steep climb reaches you on top at 5,322 m high facing grand views.

Enjoy the spectacular scenery of surrounding beautiful landscapes and a snow mountain range of Annapurna, Chulu’s, and Damodar, and Himlung Himal.

From the pass back on the main trail of Annapurna circuit to main Manang village with a visit of Braga monastery. Manang village is a large settlement, located above Masrsyangdi River facing close views of Annapurna and Chulu peaks.   

After a wonderful time at Manang village in the comfort of a lovely lodge, a walk leads further west into arid terrain. On reaching the base of Thorang-La Pass at the end of Manang valley with last overnight around Manang area.

Next early morning a steep undulating climb reaches you on top of the highest point of the adventure at Thorang-La. The pass is marked with thousands of colorful prayer flags, a board stands with a name and altitude at 5,416 m.

Enjoy the fantastic panorama of the high western Himalayan peaks with the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range, and then down to another Phedi. On reaching at the bottom of Thorang-La with a big drop of near 1200 m then walk to Muktinath.
Muktinath is a holy temple and one of the main pilgrimage spots for Hindu as well as for some Buddhism followers. The word literally means a place for salvation or liberate from oneself to Nirvana, from here last day walk to Jomsom.

Spending overnight at Muktinath with grand views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and peaks of Mustang area, last day walk to Jomsom. Enjoy the final trek of the adventure heading down to Kaligandaki River valley on a gradual trail to Jomsom.

A large town and headquarter of Mustang district, located on ancient Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route to Tibet. Where caravan laden with goods from both sides Nepal and Tibet passed through this town of Jomsom.

Next early morning a scenic short flight to beautiful Pokhara, a renowned tourist destination of Nepal, probably in the whole Himalaya. At Pokhara where our overwhelming adventure completes, before heading back to Kathmandu, after a wonderful experience on Nar-Phu High Manang Valley Trekking.

Please Note:
The above standard itinerary are just guidelines, some days of trekking and drives might lead us to change, due to the road and walking trail conditions. 
In May and June 2021, a massive flood and landslide damaged most of trails and motorable roads as well some bridges, especially around Chame, Tal and Dharapani village’s areas. However, construction is in progress to make the road and trail condition back to normal.

Trip Itinerary

On first arrival in Kathmandu and Nepal international airport, received by our Epic Adventures staff and guide for short transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu. After a short refreshing rest in your room then join with other group members for trek briefing, our expert guide will provides full information regarding the trek, culture, tour of Kathmandu at places of interest.

Evening a welcome dinner in a typical Nepalese restaurants with local folk cultural program entertains, while you have dinner.

A day in Kathmandu for trek preparation and tour at places of great interest around best historical and cultural places. Our city tour guide will take you to famous areas listed in World Heritage Sites and then back to hotel after a wonderful time at sightseeing tour with time for preparation for next day Nar-Phu High Manang Valley Trekking.

Start early morning after breakfast for long and interesting drive from Kathmandu towards Nepal Mid-West Himalayas. Overland journey takes you on the main Kathmandu / Pokhara highway for some hours, heading through farm villages and towns, and then our route diverts from the main road towards low farm area in Lamjung district. As ride continues to Besisar town and headquarter of Lamjung district. After a refreshing break drive continues following Masrsyangdi River to reach Syange.

From Syange farm village, then head towards winding up on hilly rough tracks to Jagat village for first overnight stop of the adventure, a nice village with views of beautiful water-falls.

After first overnights at Jagat village, enjoy the breakfast and then start the morning with our first day walk above from Masrsyangdi River with gradual climb to Chamje village.

From Chamje onwards where you can notice more of Buddhism religion and culture. As walk progress cross a small bridge over Masrsyangdi River then into cool shade of mixed forest, and then a short climb to a high ridge as walk takes you to lunch stop at Tal Besi, a nice village situated on a valley within the entrance of Manang district.

Afternoon walk follows with slow climb and then on gentle winding path to Dharapani for overnight stop, from here onward within alpine region as air gets much cooler. Dharapani village located on the junction of Annapurna and Manaslu circuit routes.

From Dharapani village, morning walk starts heading further North West as walk leads into nice woodland of blue pines, rhododendron and fir trees to Bagarchap and Danque villages. A nice place growing apples with many orchard gardens, enjoy views of Annapurna II and III with Lamjung Himal and Manaslu range of peaks. As walk leads to a steep up reaching at Timang, a lovely large village of mixed community hill tribes with Magar, Gurung and some Hindu Chettries and Bharamins.  

At Timang possible lunch stop, facing grand views of Annapurna and as far towards Manaslu range with Lamjung Himal. Afternoon walk of few hours to Koto village for overnight stop, near Chame the headquarter town of Manang district.

Morning after early breakfast start the walk for the long day of more than six hours, on leaving the main Annapurna circuit trail to enter the Nar & Phu valley. 

As our route passes through lovely woods, past small cave shelters a travelers resting spots. Walk continues to a narrow canyon and past a wide waterfall, from this section the forest gets thinner with wider views of surrounding scenery. 

The last stretch of walk to Meta involves a steep climb up to a hill, facing grand views of the giant snow peaks. On reaching Meta for overnight stop, situated on a wide open plain with few lodges, which are simple and clean and provides good meals. The area similar to Tibetan landscapes dry and arid, on walks chances of spotting some wildlife. Like Blue Sheep, Musk deer’s and other animals, if lucky might get a glimpse of snow leopard. 

Today adventure leads to our major destination at Phu village, morning trail meanders along the ridge with super view of Nar Phedi Monastery. After a long day of good walk with another hours through scenic canyons and gorges, then reach a monolith that guards the steep route to Phu village.

As trek continues with first view of all the villages around the area with an old ‘Dzong’ a Tibetan-style fortress and the remains of ruined forts, impressively stands on top of the valley floor. Walk to cross a bridge then enter Phu village lined by magnificent Chorten, a Buddhist monuments that colors the surrounding landscape. Overnight in a simple basic lodge but clean with homely environment and goof foods to enjoy.

Enjoy rest day at Phu village, a perfect place for acclimatization as well to explore around this impressive windblown village. Visit the old Tashi-Khang, Samdu Choling Monastery with views of Kyichu waterfalls. Phu Village with about 30 houses for 100 to 150 local inhabitants.

From Phu, after a wonderful time today a short day morning starts on downhill to a river side, on the same trail of previous day. As walk heads towards near Meta, and then diverts towards Nar Phedi monastery, which will be overnight accommodation. For a small place, the monastery is the only major building that Nar Phedi has to offer. The rooms are clean and witness the kitchen staff prepare dinner on a modest fireplace. 

After an interesting stop and overnight at Nar Phedi, another short day of few hours to Nar-Gaon. Morning walk follows a winding gradual uphill to reach Nar, enter a lovely painted Chorten / Stupa built with bamboo topped.
Enjoy rest of the afternoon after checking in a small nice lodge, walk and explore around the village and observe, the local women with back-strap looms weaving yak wool fabric for rugs and blankets. 

We have allowed another half day walk due to the nature of high and rough arid landscapes, to make the traverse over Kang-La pass much easier and shorter camping at the base of the pass. From Nar-Gaon walk to remote wilderness, away from human settlement, an interesting walk of few hours with short ups on rocky path. As walk follows Temdenzon Khola / stream. Then complete the morning walk at the base of Kang-La pass for overnight stop in tented camp at 4,530 meters high.

The first high pass of the adventure before Thorang-La, start the climb after an early good breakfast as well carrying pack-lunch for the day. Although a steep haul but not difficult except for the long hour walk, finally after a tough climb reach on top Kang-La at 5,322 m high. From the pass enjoy mind-blowing views of Pisang Peak and Chulu Far East Peak with Annapurna massif mountain range.

After a short refreshing stop enjoying the glorious scenery, walk downhill to Ngawal for overnight stop in nice lodge after a hard day and crossing the first high pass of the treks. Ngawal A small farm village with fine good lodge, located above Manang valley, the local similar to Nar- Phu people of strong Tibetan origin.

From here onward to Jomsom via Thorang-La walk on main popular trail of Annapurna circuit Enjoy, enjoy morning views of Pisang and Chulu peaks with Annapurna IV and II, after a nice breakfast, a pleasant walk downhill toreach near Hongde, a village with a small airstrip. After a short refreshing rest carry on trekking and just before main Manang village, visit the old Braga Monastery of great religious interest. After a lovely morning an hour walk from Braga to Manang village for overnight stop.

Manang the main village, a large settlement of typical Tibetan style houses where most of the big houses serves as excellent lodges and restaurants. Afternoon at leisure visit around this nice village, where most houses are built in Tibetan tradition, the local native of Manang migrated from Tibet more than 400 years back, as you can notice colorful culture and custom similar to Tibetans.

After a pleasant time in Manang village, from here a short day to Yak Kharka on route Thorang-La Pass. Walk starts on gradual uphill wide path facing views of Gangapurna Himal, as walk progress to Ghunsang a small settlement and then reach Yak Kharka for overnight stop.

Yak Kharka a summer grazing field for Yaks and other cattle, due to mass flow of trekkers over the years, Manang people has made a temporary settlement with fine houses serving as lodges and guest houses, a scenic spot with grand views Chulu West and Gangapurna with Tilicho peak. At Yak Kharka for lunch and overnight stop, with free afternoon for leisure walks and rest.

Another short day walk, but due to altitude gain makes the morning trek quite longer, as you leave Yak Kharka and reach Ledar another small place having few good lodges. From here walk on gradual path and then down to a stream with short climb as walk continues on gentle path to Thorang Phedi.

Phedi the bottom of the pass, here for refreshing stop and then last hour climb reach you at Thorang High Camp for lunch and overnight stop.

Another Big day to cross Thorang-La the second last pass and the highest, after early breakfast then head towards the highest point of the adventure, walk follows on gentle path for sometimes and then a climb on winding ups to reach a small glacial ponds. From here another hour of good tough climb reach you on top Thorang-la Pass at 5,416 m / 17,700 feet.

At the top feeling tired and excited on reaching the highest spot, the pass is marked with thousands of Buddhist colorful prayer flags and a sign board with the name of the pass and the height.

Enjoy wide panorama of all peaks of Chulu Himal, Damodar Himal, includes great views of Annapurna Himalaya and Dhaulagiri Mountain range. From the top on achieving our target and final highlight of the adventure, then on long downhill to the bottom of Thorang-La around Mustang district. 

The Phedi on this side with few small shades serves as tea-houses, after a rest and probably for simple lunch stop, then a slow pleasant walk reach you at Muktinath area at the height of 3,800 m for overnight stop. 

Muktinath, a holy place for Hindu pilgrims as well for Buddhist followers, the word Muktinath means a place for ‘Nirvana or Liberation’. Having time for short tour of holy premises and walk towards the village for overnight stop in the comfort of nice cozy lodge, facing excellent views of Tilicho, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri mountain range.

At Muktinath around Mustang area, where motorable has reached since past few decades, enjoy the last day walk of the adventure with long descend to Kaligandaki River valley. As trek continues around wide Kaligandaki River valley to large town at Jomsom, the headquarter of Mustang district and the main hub of local Thakali people, the indigenous tribes of Lower Mustang and Kaligandaki River valley. 

Early morning having hearty breakfast short walk to Jomsom airport where less than half hour flight in a small aircraft reach you to Pokhara, a renowned touristic spot in the close shadow of Annapurna Himalayas with serene Phewa and Begnas Lakes. From Pokhara airport, a short drive to the hotel by the Phewa Lake, with time for tour of Pokhara or walk around the beautiful lake side.

Morning after a good breakfast an overland on the same scenic highway, where drive takes you past farm country, villages and towns as journey continues on leaving the Trisuli River behind where drive takes you on winding up to reach the suburb of Kathmandu valley. Enjoy the last hour drive as you enter into hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu, afternoon free at leisure for individual activities. (Option by air from Pokhara to Kathmandu a 30 minutes flight facing tremendous views of Himalaya range of peaks).
