Overview

Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking with Epic Adventures, a specially designed itinerary, allows trekkers to explore and enjoy this magnificent adventure. Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak and the second tallest mountain of Nepal, is located in the Far North Eastern Himalaya range.

Probably, the only adventure with opportunity for keen trekkers visiting both base camps in one journey. Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking is also one of the longest trips of more than three weeks’ time frame.

Its remote location makes the trek longer where scenic short flights and exciting drive involves both ways. The beauty and major highlight of Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking is following a quiet and serene trail. Where adventure takes you away from the busy, popular mainstream route and on off the beaten tracks, encountering few trekkers.

The other marvelous about the trek is walking into a beautiful forest within tall rhododendron, magnolia, oaks, and pine, fir trees. The hill farm villages are also worth a visit and to explore the local immense culture of both Hindu and Buddhism. The country landscapes dramatically change higher up, from green forest to arid terrain with the arctic zone of snow and glaciers.

Mt. Kanchenjunga at 8,586 m / 28, 169 feet, a group of peaks makes the whole Kanchenjunga a massive range. First climbed by British Expedition led by late Sir George Band and his team of mountaineers on May 25th, 1955. The normal route for the climb of Mt. Kanchenjunga from the south base camp near Oakthang as used by early expeditions.

The north face base camp is situated at Pang-Pema at 5,190 m high which is the highest point of the adventure. The North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga is close to Yalung Kang, also known as Kanchenjunga West at 8,505 m high. Mt. Kanchenjunga straddles between Nepal and Sikkim, north-east state of India, most popular trek and the climb is from Nepal. The original name of this beautiful mountain is Kanchendzonga of Tibetan origin language means five jewels that represent the five peaks.  

Epic Adventurers Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp treks start with a sweeping flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur airport around the low Terai belt. From the low flat land of Eastern Nepal, a drive takes you to the starting point of the trek in Taplejung.

Where walk takes you through many spread-out farm-lands and villages, and then into the sheer mountain wilderness. Journey first leads you to Oakthang at Kanchenjunga base camp, and then next adventure towards north base camp at Pang-Pema. The highest spot of the trek, here with time to marvel at the great beautiful scenery of the world’s tallest peaks. As well as being close to great ice-fall, glaciers with a high Mountain range encircles the base camp.

After an enjoyable and most spectacular moment visiting both south and north base camps, return journey by alternative routes. Takes you down and ups with more descend as you lose altitude to reach back within warm farm villages. On completing the long walks of near two weeks, an exciting drive on the hilly road takes you past Ilam town. A lovely place famous for tea and sea of tea gardens and then drive towards the flat land Terai. A scenic flight brings you back to the city life of Kathmandu, after a mesmerizing adventure around Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking.

Trip Itinerary

On first arrival in Kathmandu and Nepal international airport, received by our Epic Adventures staff and guide for short transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu. After a short refreshing rest in your room then join with other group members for trek briefing, our expert guide will provides full information regarding the trek, culture, tour of Kathmandu at places of interest.

Evening a welcome dinner in a typical Nepalese restaurants with local folk cultural program entertains, while you have dinner.

A day in Kathmandu for trek preparation and tour at places of great interest around best historical and cultural places. Our city tour guide will take you to famous areas listed in World Heritage Sites and then back to hotel after a wonderful time at sightseeing tour with time for preparation for next day adventure to Mt. Kanchenjunga base camp.

Morning as per the flight time for Tumlingtar airport board in a moderate size aircraft for exciting scenic flight overlooking super panorama of Central and Eastern Himalayas with views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu as far to Kanchenjunga in the east. After 40 or 45 minutes then landing at Bhadrapur airport, received by our trekking staff and guide. From Bhadrapur small town, located on the Far Eastern Nepal with low land of Terai belt, where climate is sub-tropical. Board in a vehicles Jeep, land cruiser or four wheelers best for hilly rough roads, where drive takes you towards cooler hills. As drive continues reach Ilam town a famous place for tea and Tea Gardens, journey heads further to Phidim for overnight stop in a local simple lodge.

After breakfast an exciting drive towards Sukhetar, located within Taplejung district and Kanchenjunga region, journey on rough muddy tracks past farm terraces and villages on winding ups, then end the drive at Sukhetar.

Sukhetar a town with a small airstrip often fly to Kathmandu and Biratnagar city flight from here is quite unpredictable, that is why Epic Adventures choose the safe options, flying to Bhadrapur which is all season airport and the flights are regular depending upon the weather wise.

At Sukhetar time to get organized for the onward journey, and re-packing where heavier baggage are carried by our strong porters. First day walk to Lali Kharka, on undulating path with short descend within forest of pine; then finally end the walk at Lali-Kharka for overnight stop, a small nice farm village with view of Mt. Kanchenjunga.

From this village walk begins having a hearty breakfast served and prepared by our expert camping cook, and kitchen hands.

Today a long hour walks starts with downhill past villages, populated by Hindu people a mixture of Brahmins, Chettries and Kirat tribes. The Rai and Limbu, practice Hinduism along with their own ancient culture and deities. 

Walk leads past Tembawa village with descend to Phawa khola stream then to Pokora village, walk on terraced farm fields then cross Pokora's suspension bridge as route leads to steep climb to Kunjari village. From here head towards a forested area, then climb to overnight stop at Kande Bhanjyang, a small farm village with great views of Kanchenjunga and Yalungkhang peaks.

Spending a lovely overnight at Kande Bhanjyang, morning begins with steep descend to a terraced rice and millet fields, then walk within forested area and on the headwaters of Nandeva khola. After crossing a stream walk downhill to a river, and the climb to a forested path then reaching Loppoding village. 

From here the route takes you ups and down to a small spot called Fun Fun a resting spot for travelers. The ridge top offers views of Khumbakarna Himal, Yalung peaks with Kanchenjunga. After enjoying the views descend to reach Yangpang village, and then climb on gentle slope for an hour to overnight stop at Pompe Dhada. Located on a crest of scenic ridge, a great spot for overnight camp facing view of Mt. Jannu.

Adventure continues next morning on winding path with downhill through terraced farm fields towards Khesewa khola, cross over a suspension bridge and then climb for an hour to Mamankhe village. After lunch stop a slow climb, skirting a high ridge on a level path to reach Dekadin village. 

From here gentle up and down after crossing several smaller streams, facing views of surrounding landscapes, then down on stone paved steps to Kabeli khola, on leaving the river behind climbs to a ridge past smaller villages and farm fields. After an hour climb or reaching at Yamphudin, with another hour uphill to overnight stop at Sherpa Gaon. The last permanent village populated mostly by Sherpa tribe follows Buddhism religion.

Morning from small Sherpa Gaon village, walk to Chitre along Kabeli khola, and crossing tributary stream Omje khola, as climb start with steep up to Dhupi Bhangyang uphill of more than two hours to reach on top Lahse Tham at 3,800 m high pass, from here descend to a deciduous forest back to Omje Khola. 

From here back into tree-lines as walk follows within rhododendron forest as last leg of the walk ends on reaching Dorongding for overnight camp.

Walk today takes you on route Kanchenjunga south base camp as trail follows to Ramite Bhanjyang 3,430 m, where climb leads to steep hill for few hours into magnolias, rhododendron and bamboo forest then walk to Ramite an isolated spot with a single hut. From here walk leads to climb within forested ridge, then head to a small pond. Where trail leads to Simbua Khola into dense forest of pine and rhododendron, then walk to Wahta. After a short rest walk past to a small with a shrine close to a huge serpent shaped boulder. 

After heading past forest walk leads to a riverbed, then uphill to a grassy terrace where our overnight camp is set at this place called Tseram, with few roofless bivouac caves a natural shelter for travelers. From here one can witness a terminal moraine fed from Yalung glacier with views of Kabru 7, 353 m and Talung peak 7,349 m. 

Here at Tseram with free day where one choose the options for day hike to Oktang near to Mt. Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, where early British expedition climb to the Kanchenjunga summit from the southern route.

Day hike follows with close view of Yalung Glacier the south wall flank of Mt. Kanchenjunga, walk takes near to 3-4 hours. Enjoy the views of Talung Peak and Kabru. After a scenic, exciting day hike head back to overnight camp at Tserem.

From this remote wilderness walk starts with descend past Yalung Bar and then short steep up, to cross a river then on gentle winding path into cool shade of forest. As climb continues for an hour to reach a small clear ponds. After a short rest and then climb to cross over three smaller passes Mirgin-La, Tamo-La and Tsele-La above 4, 250 m. On top all these passes rewards you with incredible views of Kabru peak, Mt. Kanchenjunga massif includes Mt. Makalu and Baruntse Himal. From the top of last pass a long descend to the base around a nice grassy field to our overnight camp.

After a tough day of previous walk over three passes in a day, today’s walk is long but much pleasant on gradual path with gentle descend for an hour into a forest of rhododendron and pines as route follows a large field towards Ghunsa river, and a short pleasant walk reach you to Ghunsa village for overnight. 

A nice lovely mountain village populated by Sherpa and Bhotia tribes (Tibetan origin) lined with community built neat stone houses with a small farm field growing wheat, barley and buck-wheat as well some high altitude vegetables.

An enjoyable slow and scenic walk as altitude gains gradually heading much higher mountainous country. Morning begins with climb following a river with grand views of cascading waterfalls, walking through temporary shelter of Yak herders. As adventure progress a steep ascent to Rambuk Kharka, another grazing area where route leads towards a glacier landslide facing excellent views of Kumbakarna Himalaya with Mt. Janu. Then slowly tree lines drops for short alpine bush and shrubs on reaching a wild barren terrain at Khamvachen for overnight camp. Morning walk from Khambachen follows high above a river for an hour as route leads further north east, then descend to a river, then climbs over rocks and boulder to reach a terminal moraine and glacier of Mt. Kanchenjunga, and then finally walk ends at Lhonak for last overnight camp on route to north base camp. The camp within close from Kanchenjunga glacier with superb views of Mera, Nepal Peak and Wedge Peaks.

At Lhonak with extra day for long hike to Pang-Pema where North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga located as well the main highlight of the adventure. Morning carrying pack lunch start the day with slow climb above a river facing grand views of Kirat Chuli, Nepal Peak, Taple Sikhar, and Givegela Chuli. In the beginning with gradual climb and then coming across rocks and boulder with rocky trail to follow for short hour. As walk continues coming across grassy slopes and a glaciated path to reach Pang-Pema at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. 

Fantastic places and surroundings of pure wilderness as well chances of spotting some wild-life like herds of blue sheep and mountain goats or Himalayan Thar, which is quite common around this peaceful area.

Enjoy the views and massive face of Mt. Kanchenjunga with adjoining peaks and Ice fall, after a great experience head back to camp at Lhonak for last overnight on the higher side of Mt. Kanchenjunga region.

After a most memorable experience retrace the walk back on the same route to Ghunsa village via Khambachen a long day but well worth the views of lovely scenery.

From Ghunsa onward where route leads on alternative trail with more opportunity to experience around this beautiful country facing views of mountains and through summer herder camps to reach Gypla Phedi for overnight stop.

The walk gets pleasant as altitude drops heading towards much warmer area back into farm village with few ups and more downhill wall to reach Sekathum or near to Japantar for overnight camp.

Morning till afternoon enjoy the walk on downhill walk coming across more farm village and well cultivated farm fields and terraces, as friendly local greets you with cheerful smiles as you pass through villages and then end the day at Chirwa for overnight stop. 

Most of the day is all downhill with few short climb to negotiate while walking towards much warmer low country on the foot hills of Kanchenjunga, slowly our walk reach you at Phurumbu School where overnight camp is pitched near the school yard.

Enjoy the last day trek of the adventure as it ends on reaching at Sukhetar a nice pleasant walk downhill encountering many farm villages and local farmers, and then finally day ends at Sukhetar, for overnight stop around Taplejung district.

After a good breakfast and then taking an interesting drive to Ilam a nice town and famous for Tea and its sea of Tea Garden, the flavor of the local tea much appreciated throughout Nepal and abroad.

Drive can be quite bumpy on hilly rough road but exciting as scenic drive reach you at Ilam, and check into a nice simple lodge for last overnight around Eastern Nepal and Kanchenjunga region. Here with time for short stroll around the town for last glimpse of local immense culture.

As flight time for Kathmandu, depart from Ilam town for few hour drive to reach at Bhadrapur airport, and then board in an aircraft for sweeping flight of less than an hour to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu domestic airport transfer for short drive to your hotel, rest of the day at free at leisure for individual activities.

Spare and contingency day, enjoy this free day after a great adventure to Mt. Kanchenjunga base camp. This free day allows to maintain the itinerary days in case of bad weather on route trekking that might delay our schedules. 

On this extra day enjoy individual activities or join in for another exciting sightseeing tour of other interesting places like Patan and Bhaktapur worth a visit.

Last day in Kathmandu and in Nepal, as per your international flight time our staff and guide will accompany you for a short drive to international airport for final departure, after a memorable and fabulous adventure Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking and around amazing Nepal.
